REDPET – HRZZ Contamination risks to the Adriatic Sea from oil pollution

About Project

The project focuses on pollution caused by shipyards/oil transport and maritime traffic in Kvarner bay area in the last century. With the premise of evolutionary adaptation to oil pollution and its possible use as carbon source by local microbial life we are trying to capture potentially useful enzymes for degradation of alkanes.

The aim and an overall goal of this project is to predict, identify, clone by DNA synthesis, heterologously express, characterise and patent entirely novel enzyme systems for the degradation of short and long chain linear, cyclic or branched alkanes. The second goal is to test the innovation and functionality of a bioinformatic platform for the automated annotation of sequenced metagenomes.

The project is financed by Croatian Science Foundation.
